Sponsorship Opportunity: Flatiron Public Plaza Wi-Fiwifi
The district's free Wi-Fi access in the ever-popular Public Plazas is provided by the Flatiron 23rd Street Partnership. To help the BID maintain this service, become an official Wi-Fi sponsor and gain a chance to expand your business or organization's digital presence.

More than 36,000 unique online visitors, who also call the Public Plazas their go-to place to meet, eat, and relax, have logged in since the program's June 2011 launch.

If you're interested in learning more about becoming an official sponsor, please contact Eric Zaretsky, ezaretsky@flatironbid.org for more information.

Social Media Shout-Out: PENCILpencil
Here's a shout-out to a Flatiron district business that is using social media and the web to maximum effect. This month: PENCIL

Founded in 1995, PENCIL is a non-profit organization that pioneered the idea of improving student achievement by developing and supporting long-term partnerships between businesses and public schools. The PENCIL Partnership Program, one of their two core programs, matches business volunteers with public school principals based on backgrounds, interests, and goals, to develop solutions that transform their schools. The PENCIL Fellows Program provides promising public high school students with career readiness training that includes paid summer internships at leading businesses throughout New York City.  PENCIL uses social media and other web-based tools to tell their story, encourage support and participation, and promote their organization's agenda.

Interactive social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, are used by PENCIL to engage their constituents in discussions, promote stories about successes and accomplishments and keep people informed about upcoming events. They also use these methods to reach out to potential sponsors and partners. In addition, websites such as Flickr showcase events and recognize supporters.

Videos on PENCIL's website and YouTube also help to convey their stories. The 2012 PENCIL Fellow Web Diaries is a recurring feature that highlights what Fellows are doing at work and how their experiences are preparing them for professional success.

PENCIL's digital newsletter PENCIL Points aims to drive readers to the PENCIL website as well as keep them updated on news and events.

Summer Streets Season Finale: Saturday, August 18thsummerstreets

For the fifth year in a row, several miles of Manhattan roadway, from Lower Manhattan to the Upper East Side, and including part of the Flatiron district along Park Avenue South, will be closed to vehicular traffic from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Summer Streets program, a project from New York City's Department of Transportation, turns a valuable public space over to alternative uses in order to promote healthier lifestyles through recreation. The program is part of the city's greening initiative, which encourages individuals to adopt sustainable forms of transportation.

Free activities along the route, which runs from Centre Street in lower Manhattan north to 72nd Street and Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side, will include rock climbing at Spring Street, free bike helmets at 51st Street, and a zip line at Foley Square.

Parking will be restricted along the route beginning at midnight on Friday through Saturday until 2 p.m.  For more information about this month's 2012 Summer Streets program, click here.
