A Fresh Look for Tree Pits & Park Avenue South Malls
Trees are to be treasured, especially in Manhattan. The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership takes that role seriously, and has funded the expansion of 13 tree pits on 21st, 22nd and 24th Streets, and Park Avenue South, between 21st and 22nd Streets. Enlarging the size of the pit allows for safer growth and better irrigation for the tree. These pits have also received the latest fall planting of ornamental cabbage and kale, and will soon be outfitted with tree guards.
With these newly expanded tree pits, the BID now plants and maintains 89 pits in the district, which covers over half of the BID's boundaries. Over the next two planting cycles, the spring and fall of 2013, the BID intends to make sure every remaining tree in the district has an adequate guard, and will provide the plantings and maintenance unless the respective property owner is actively performing these duties.

In addition to protecting the district's trees and improving the sidewalk aesthetic, the BID recently installed its fall planting of the Park Avenue South median malls between 21st and 28th Streets. These plantings - ornamental cabbage and kale - match the tree pits and also the plantings in the Flatiron Public Plazas.
When you're out and about enjoying the fall season, take some time to appreciate all of the beautiful plantings throughout the Flatiron district!

"It was thrilling to see so many people network with each other, celebrate the neighborhood, support the BID, and have an overall great time at one of the most stunning venues in the district."
Notable guests included Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney of the 14th District, which covers Manhattan's East Side and Western Queens, and Emmy Award-winning NBC newsman and Flatiron resident Lester Holt, who once told the BID that his favorite thing about the district is "the architecture -- the best and most interesting buildings in the city."
